First 72 Hours
A calm, practical guide for the first days after diagnosis—what to gather, what to ask, and how to plan the next right step.
Quick Checklist (15–20 minutes)
- Choose one “point person” to help manage info and appointments.
- Get a folder (physical or digital) for labs, imaging, and notes.
- Write three goals for your first appointments (clarity, options, timeline).
- List medications & allergies (name, dose, schedule).
Your First Appointments
Ask for copies of visit summaries and imaging reports. It’s okay to bring someone with you and to record (with permission) so you can review later.
Records to Gather
- Photo ID and insurance card
- Pathology reports, imaging CDs/links, and prior labs
- Medication & allergy list
- Relevant medical history or prior treatments
Building Your Care Team
Identify your core specialists (medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgery). It’s appropriate to ask about tumor board reviews and second opinions.
Questions to Ask
- What type and stage is this? How confident are we in the staging?
- What are the treatment options and goals?
- What are the expected side effects and how are they managed?
- Should we consider genetic testing or a second opinion?
- What decisions need to be made this week vs. later?
Support & Communication
Decide how and what to share. Consider a group text or private page to reduce repeat updates. Ask for practical help (meals, rides, childcare, prayers).
